Aquarium Operations Manager

Historic Tours of America Key West, FL (Onsite) Full-Time

Position Summary

The Operations Manager is responsible for providing oversight of the departments in the aquarium. In doing so, this position ensures the execution of the Aquariums operational procedures and policies and the day-to-day care of the animals and exhibits. This position requires the ability to lead, motivate, and manage others and promote a harmonious workplace.

Job Requirements:

Essential Functions

  • Oversee and assist in the daily management of the practical and logistical needs of various operations within the Aquarium (collection planning, exhibit design, manager on duty, etc.)
  • Manage supervisors and their employees in achieving goals; plan and organize workloads and staff assignments/schedules. Participate in the hiring, training, and reviewing processes of staff.
  • Assist the Community Outreach Supervisor with developing programming
  • Ensure water quality testing is being done correctly, timely, and documented by the Aquarist Supervisor team.
  • Assist the Aquarist Supervisor in researching and preparing diet for the animals and that their nutrition needs are met.
  • Assisting with Aquarium life support systems (LSS), to ensure the most professional, effective, and successful animal exhibits
  • Assisting in monitoring animal exams for illness detection, injury, or disease, and checking physical characteristics and arranging for veterinary care.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocations, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Ability to make a budget, determine how money will be spent to get the work done, and accounting for these expenditures.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills in English, including the ability to clearly express thoughts to others and exchange information and to complete required paperwork correctly.
  • Demonstrate group presentation skills and ability to conduct meetings.

Qualifications

  • Biology/Zoology or Environmental Science degree or Business Management related college degree or work experience preferred.
  • Prior 3 to 5 years management experience required.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record for past three years.
